November 22 Comic

I'm pretty behind the pace I set for myself, but I have officially finished 11 out of the assigned 15 strips. Only four more to go!

New Diary Comic Project

My friend Gariet and I are trying to challenge ourselves, and co-make a little zine for the month of November. We both kind of fell off the creative map after having kids and we decided to do a split diary comic together to get back into the creative world. Our Facebook page is here. Here are my first few diary entries.

Poor Substitute

I've been loving this new single and video by Robert Pollard's new band Ricked Wicky. The video is funny and beautiful, with pathos and a nice meta quality. The song is really good too, kind of a hard rocking ballad.

As a music collector, I've been suffering from too long of a wish list -- there are so many albums by so many artists that I want to get (on a budget) that I was feeling overwhelmed. I was also starting to feel that I was somehow missing out on a lot of my favorite artists. So I set myself the goal of spending most of my money on my four favorite active artists: 1. The Beach Boys 2. Will Oldham/Bonnie Prince Billy 3. Robert Pollard/Guided by Voices and 4. Kool Keith.

It's been working out really well so far, though I am still woefully behind. For instance, I haven't purchased ANY of Robert Pollard's 2015 releases (there have been two albums from Ricked Wicky alone). I have made great strides though on catching up on his older releases picking up these GBV albums and EPs so far: Vampire on Titus/Propeller, Sunfish Holyfish Breakfast, The Pipe Dreams of Instant Prince Whippet, Live in Austin, TX, and Normal Happiness (a solo release).

Three years later

Starting in 2010, I set myself the goal to make an annual zine and mix CD of my favorite music for each year. Prior to that, I had been doing a different annual zine about our family life (since 2007). Unfortunately, after writing half of my zine for 2012, I simply stopped working on it. Yesterday, I finally finished that zine. It only took three years! I finished the writing, (around 9,000 - 10,000 words) a few weeks ago, but I couldn't figure out how to draw the main cover image. I always knew it would be a werewolf howling at an orange moon, in tribute to my two favorite albums of the year - Frank Ocean's Channel Orange, and Fiona Apple's The Idler Wheel... (from which I included the song "Werewolf"). I'm really pleased with the final cover image. And now I can finally move on to another project!

Black Captain

Ignoring the fact that Bonnie "Prince" Billy looks ridiculous in this video, this song is really blowing me away. The female singer, Angel Olsen, is amazing and BPB's singing is especially good. Love the harmonium and harmonies. This is better than the studio version!

This recording gave me a whole new appreciation of the song and I have been listening to it nonstop as part of my BPB renaissance.
