Coraline in 3-D

Last Sunday we saw Coraline in theatres. I wanted to mention it earlier in but it's really been a busy week.

We haven't seen a first run movie in the theatre in ages but we just had to go see Coraline as Sunday was the last day it was playing in 3-D in Portland. The tickets were extra expensive, but we were given these cool Roy Orbison looking glasses. I had never seen a 3-D movie before but it was a great experience. It's hard to describe how different it was. There was just a much greater depth of field.

The movie itself was really enjoyable. I usually won't watch a kids or all ages movie in theatres (except Miyazaki) because there's something unfulfilling about them, even movies by the likes of Pixar. Coraline did not leave me with this empty feeling. It was "edgy" for a kids move and had terrific animation.

Coraline is the first feature movie by the Portland animation studio Laika. Seeing it really filled me with hometown pride. We've briefly met several people involved in making Coraline, and one of the cameramen for it is a customer of ours at Guapo. Laika is also a client of the law firm I work at for my day job.

I dig stop-animation and have been a fan of it since the days when I was a kid and Laika was Will Vinton Sstudios and I would watch the California Raisins, Claymation Christmas, and the PJ's with my dad (I also loved Ray Harryhausen's stuff). I hope Coraline opens the door for Laika to make a lot more movies.

Rock Rock Rockaway Beach

Last weekend we stayed at our favorite local beach in Rockaway, Oregon. The weather was great there. I don't think it rained once.

It also happened to be Valentine's weekend. I received some nice gifts from Jeremy.
Two pairs of earrings.
He said he couldn't decide between the two pairs so the lady made him a deal for both. He got them at Gold Door on Hawthorne (a place that is probably the easiest bet to find a present I'll like).
One pair is silver and onyx. The other pair is one of my favorite gems- amber.

We also visited the Tillamook Dairy to eat free cheese samples and get delicious ice cream. Jeremy for some reason always insists on taking pictures of us eating ice cream here.

Jeremy opted for the orange sherbet/vanilla bean combo.

Here I am mocking Jeremy's need for ice cream photos. I chose my old standard -Bubble Gum.

We also took home our usual Tillamook Dairy loot.

The delicious sharp cheddar spread (that we have only been able to find at the Dairy), extra sharp cheddar cheese, and some cheese curds for Jeremy's parents.

All in all, it was great to get away. Jeremy even made me watch a sunset.

Sometimes a negative can be a positive.

I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of two dresses from Target. What really sold me on the dresses were a couple of negative reviews at the website.
They included:

"it is cute but so hard to make it NOT look like a I might be obsessed with Julie Andrews."

and

"Are you ready to be a maid??

Honestly, this is the perfect dress for someone wanting to dress up as a maid. It's poofy in the skirt, and if taken up a little bit would be the perfect overskirt for someone dressing goth-lolita (it even has a lace petticoat o_O).
All you need is a puffy sleeved shirt!!!"

Well, puffy and poofy are my favorite kinds of dresses, and I just might be obsessed with Julie Andrews wardrobe in the "Sound of Music." I have always loved those curtain dresses she makes for the Von Trapp fam.

Here is the dress. I guess we'll see.

We're back from the Coast

We had a great weekend at the Oregon Coast. We went swimming, bought antiques and cheese, and watched 3 movies. We watched the romantic "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist," the almost romantic "Upside of Anger" and the not-romantic documentary "The Thin Blue Line" which is about the murder of a Dallas cop, and the subsequent trial and investigation which led to the life-in prison guilty sentence of an innocent man.

I'd post some of the many pics we took, but I don't have the equipment. Allie, where are our coast pics?? Instead, I will post some other photos I found whilst digging through the archives.

Here's a photo of our cat Macky when we gave him a bath in preparation for getting his portrait taken at a studio:

And here's a photo of Allie and me from last June, at our friend Shelly's wedding in Evanston, Wyoming.

Weekend Getaway

I'm excited to say that Allie and I are going on a mini vacation tomorrow. We'll be spending two nights at Rockaway Beach on the Oregon coast. We're going to stay at the same hotel we always go to and we'll have a beach front room. We like Rockaway Beach because it's not very touristy, just a great place to relax. The hotel's claim to fame is that Keanu Reeves stayed there during the filming of Point Break (there's an autographed photo of him on the wall). We like it so much because the rooms come with a DVD player, a gas fireplace, and a kitchenette. There's also an indoor heated pool which is great to swim in. We'll post some pictures when we get back.

A view from the top

It snowed again in Portland today. This is a picture I took from the NW hills when I was nannying this morning. It didn't really stick and it's all melted now thankfully.

Welcome and Bienvenidos

What's up party people?!? This is our new blog. I might update it with info. I might include news about zines and various art projects I might finish.

Allie may blog too. She may tell you about her crafts. She may post photos of us, as she's the one with a digital camera. She may tell you about all the cute things she know. We'll see. I might have to read this blog too, and check out all the stuff Allie is doing.

Stay tuned!
